The useful pattern
Planning horizons can be more honest than dates when priorities are known but precise timing is not.
What we observed
- Atlassian describes a board view for ideas committed now, next, and later, and a timeline view for rough monthly or quarterly dates.
- Its product guidance recommends tailoring roadmap views for different audiences and showing why work has been prioritised.
Adapt it for your roadmap
- Define the meaning of each horizon before moving cards: Now is active, Next is a likely priority, and Later is a direction to revisit.
- Put the intended outcome and the evidence beside each initiative. The Strategy Board uses fictional examples and editable columns, labels, statuses, and notes.
Later is not a hidden promise. Revisit it when evidence changes and avoid presenting it as a fixed delivery queue.
